Unit aim

Introduces and extends foundational mathematical knowledge, concepts, and skills required for study across various discipline areas. The unit focuses on developing an understanding of problem-solving and how digital technologies can be used to solve real-world mathematical problems. Students will learn how to effectively communicate concepts, thinking, and solutions to real-world mathematical problems.

Unit content

Warm Up Module – Introduction to learning/relearning mathematics

Module 1 – Number theory, arithmetic and financial mathematics

Module 2 – Algebra fundamentals

Module 3 – Solving, manipulating and graphing equations

Module 4 – Measurement and networks

Module 5 – Trigonometry and applied geometry 

Module 6 – Data analysis, statistics and probability

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 Analyse a variety of mathematical problems and identify appropriate approaches to find a solution.
2 Apply a range of mathematical concepts, techniques and digital technologies to solve a variety of real-world mathematical problems.
3 Effectively communicate mathematical concepts, thinking, and solutions at different levels of formality using verbal, written, and graphical forms of communication.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
