Unit aim
Supports the development of research and scientific communication skills for students completing an honours degree in psychology. The nature and limitations of psychological research and its application in practice are discussed. Students will reflect on, and critically evaluate, their own research practices. The ability to analyse, interpret, and communicate outcomes will be enhanced through engagement with data sets from a variety of common research designs in psychology. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of good data management practices and the ethical imperatives applying to research forming the scientific foundations of practice in psychology.
Unit content
- Planning for data analysis and interpretation
- Advantages and disadvantages of null hypothesis testing for research and practice
- Software for the analysis and presentation of results
- Effective communication of research outcomes
- Advanced Multivariate Techniques (MANOVA, Mediation, Moderation and Confirmatory Factor Analysis)
- Research strategies for the scientist-practitioner: Single case designs, time series and program evaluation
- Good data practices and the ethics of research
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
