Anti-requisites

MAT00115 Statistics I AND MAT00116 Statistics II

Unit aim

Introduces students to statistical concepts and techniques relevant to their degree. Statistical tools to model and analyse real-world situations and data are developed, enabling students to enhance their decision-making skills. The interpretation and communication of the results obtained is emphasised. Throughout the unit, Excel will be used for statistical calculations.

Unit content

  1. Descriptive statistics
  2. Data visualisation
  3. Descriptive numerical measures
  4. Basic probability
  5. Normal distribution
  6. Sampling distributions
  7. Confidence interval estimation
  8. Hypothesis testing – Part I
  9. Hypothesis testing – Part II
  10. Simple linear regression.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

GA1: Intellectual rigour, GA2: Creativity, GA3: Ethical practice, GA4: Knowledge of a discipline, GA5: Lifelong learning, GA6: Communication and social skills, GA7: Cultural competence
On completion of this unit, students should be able to: GA1 GA2 GA3 GA4 GA5 GA6 GA7
1 demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the concepts of probability, statistical inference, and regression and correlation Lifelong learning
2 make appropriate decisions based on the task requirements, by selecting and applying appropriate statistical procedures and interpreting the results obtained Intellectual rigour
3 communicate statistical ideas, processes and results effectively at different levels of formality Communication and social skills
4 use an appropriate spreadsheet or statistical software in statistical analysis Lifelong learning
5 interpret statistical output. Lifelong learning
