Unit aim

Introduces students to the legal system, business law and corporations law. It is important for all persons, accountants and business administrators to have an appreciation of the role played by law in regulating society and the business community. The unit provides students with knowledge of the legal system and sources of law in Australia. Students will be expected to use statutes, cases and other legal material to help them analyse legal situations, with a focus on business cases.

1 Recognise the structure of the legal system and identify the sources of law in Australia
2 Analyse the key principles and features of contract law
3 Identify and analyse the legal aspects of business transactions, partnerships and companies, particularly in respect of the rights, obligations, duties and liabilities of agents, partners, company members and directors
4 Recognise and analyse the legal issues related to separate legal entity, formation, operation, administration and winding up of a company
5 Develop analytical skills in the use and reading of cases, statutes and other legal material and apply these skills in resolving complex law fact situations.
