Unit aim
Introduces students to the complexities that surround the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Concepts of legal personhood and volition are explored. The implications of the integration of AI into society are analysed, as well as the legal ramifications. The role of literature and media are investigated as a pathway to brokering the human/AI relationship.
Unit content
Topic 1: Theoretical/philosophical basis: from modernism to postmodernism, to post-postmodernism.
Topic 2: Posthumanism: definition.
Topic 3: The evolving nature of legality in a digital world.
Topic 4: Technology and legal personhood.
Topic 5: Cultural beliefs and juridical categories.
Topic 6: Subjectivity vs technological object.
Topic 7: Responsibilities and boundaries.
Topic 8: The role of media and literature on acceptance of legal personhood.
