Unit aim
Concentrates on current legal issues in sport and examines how the law attempts to resolve these issues. Students will investigate the application of the law and its principles and practices as it relates to sporting organisations in relation to current sporting issues including sports governance, sports dispute resolution, personal injury, contract, marketing and intellectual property, and anti-doping in sport.
Unit content
Topic 1 Current issues in sport
Topic 2 Sports governance issues (what happens in the committee room can be reflected in on-field performance)
Topic 3 Conduct of sporting tribunals (how not to get it wrong, natural justice and procedural fairness) and alternative dispute resolution in sport
Topic 4 IP issues in sport
Topic 5 Sports injuries, the law of torts and compensation
Topic 6 The nature of sporting contracts (and some associated Industrial Relations issues)
Topic 7 Some legal issues in sport sponsorship, sport marketing and the Australian Consumer Law
Topic 8 Anti-doping in sport
