Unit aim

Introduces students to the Australian legal system and key elements of business law specifically relevant to tourism and hospitality. Another segment introduces students to some theoretical principles of business ethics. This unit encourages students to recognise the potential legal and/or ethical implications of issues encountered by managers of tourism businesses using a teacher-focused strategy to develop students' problem-solving and analytical skills.

1 describe and critically discuss the structure of the Australian legal system and how laws are made and developed
2 demonstrate a basic understanding of legislation and case law relevant to tourism and hospitality businesses
3 analyse the practical application of legal rules and principles in those areas of law commonly encountered by people in day-to-day tourism and hospitality business activities, particularly by applying the basic principles of the laws of contract, negligence and consumer protection
4 recognise the potential legal implications of issues and problems encountered by owners and managers of tourism businesses
5 demonstrate an understanding of some basic principles of business ethics and their application to tourism and hospitality operations
6 identify and analyse current legal and ethical issues.
