Unit Summary

Unit type

PG Coursework Unit

Credit points

12

Pre-requisites

PROG2006 - Designing the User Experience OR ISYS5003 - Principles of User Experience Design Unless advanced standing has been approved for one of the above units.

Unit aim

Guides students through essential processes of designing the user experience for pervasive (ubiquitous) and immersive computing applications. This unit equips students with methods, tools and technologies to design effective cross-platform user interfaces to interact with and visualise data from the Internet of Things (IoT) systems.

Unit content

Module 1. User experience design for IoT and recent trends, and responsible IoT design
Module 2. Introduction to IoT components
Module 3. Understanding user requirements and strategies
Module 4. Interface and interaction design, cross-device interactions, and inter-usability
Module 5. Designing complex and interconnected products, and Interoperability
Module 6. Iterative design: prototyping and learning

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 examine the challenges of designing user-centred interactive experiences in a pervasive computing environment such as the Internet of Things.
2 analyse requirements and determine the appropriate activities, context, and multi-platform technologies for designing user experience for interactive Internet-of-Things systems.
3 apply appropriate methods and techniques to successfully design the user interface for interactive IoT systems that engage users.
4 evaluate and propose solutions to improve user experience of IoT applications.
