Unit aim
The design and integration of graphics, text and interface elements are fundamental to multimedia applications. Screen design, interface design, intelligibility and usability are core features which impact upon both the rationale for developing digital media resources and the matching of those resources to end users. This unit introduces students to the essential elements of digital graphics, text and interface design in a practical, problem-based format.
Unit content
- Introduction to digital media.
- Hardware and software for capturing, scanning, creating and manipulating text and 2-D graphics.
- Graphical communication and information design.
- Text - Components, creation, use.
- 2-D graphics - Vector, bitmap.
- 2-D graphics - Components, creation, use.
- The principles and design of Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) for multimedia applications.
- Screen design - Achieving balance between aesthetics and functionality.
- Storage formats for text and 2-D graphics.
- Compression formats and transmission techniques for text and 2-D graphics.
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
