Unit aim

Introduces students to the origins and concepts that inform race theory and the ways that race is employed to impel, explain and justify colonial intrusion and violations. Issues of racism and eugenics are examined in the Australian context.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 describe and interpret race theory and deconstruct the origins of anti-racism in English speaking communities
2 describe the eugenic structures embedded in colonising movements and apparent in Australian policy and practices regarding Aboriginal people
3 describe racial discourse in Australia as informed by eugenic practice.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
