Unit aim

Introduces colonisation as an initial violence and examines the trauma experienced by individuals and groups, with a focus on cultural and individual resilience. Students will look at the overt, passive and perceived elements of social violence. Trauma, trans-generational trauma, trauma recovery and individual and group resilience will be explored.

Unit content

Module 1: Colonisation: initial violence & trauma, post-colonial trauma, The Stolen Generations.

Module 2: Collective trauma: Trans-Generational and Contagion trauma.

Module 3: Trauma Response I: Flight Fight. Trauma Response II: Freeze Fracture.

Module 4: Resilience and Healing.

Module 5: Cultural Awareness, Cultural Safety and Cultural Competency.

Module 6: Self-determination & empowerment: `The Cornerstones’ of healing.

Learning outcomes

3 compare factors in resilience through critical analysis of trauma theory and case studies.
