Unit aim

Assists students to critically reflect on the relationship between their academic studies and the workplace environment by providing a minimum 300 hours of practical workplace experience over 10 weeks within the hospitality sector. This double-weighted unit enables students to gain an understanding of the requirements of the hotel business environment.

Unit content

Students have the opportunity to complete an internship by undertaking productive work at an operational / supervisory level with an appropriate hospitality organisation, in Australia or overseas.

Students are responsible for finding their own internship placement. On finding a position, students must submit a Notice of Placement form to seek approval from the Unit Assessor as to the position's eligibility for an internship, prior to commencing their placement.

Industry Internship A may be taken prior to taking Industry Internship B to form a 600-hour 20 week placement across the 2 units. Unit Assessor approval is required for both Internship units.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 Explain the nature, scope, breadth and variety of employment in your chosen sector
2 Demonstrate capability and willingness to undertake a range of duties required for employment in hospitality settings
3 Apply concepts and principles of business management appropriate to the requirements of the work environment in a hotel setting
4 Critically evaluate the skills and attitudes required for success as a manager or supervisor in the hotel sector

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
