Unit aim

Explores the value of scientific research in supporting decision making in hospitality organisations, and engages with essential skills including research methodologies and the process of informing a research project. Students will undertake a research project applying the key stages of the research process through integrating skills gained in earlier units.

Unit content

There are six (6) topics in this unit:

  1. Introduction to research
  2. The research process
  3. Designing and conducting research
  4. The elements of successful research
  5. Research methodologies
  6. Writing a professional research report

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 Produce and present proposals outlining hospitality research project plans for critical review
2 Using various research methodologies, collect and critically analyse relevant information to inform a research topic
3 Follow the research process to develop an informed and professional report addressing a real-time research problem and provide recommendations that are evidence-based
4 Communicate and present research findings (orally, written) across various settings (academia, hospitality industry)
