Unit aim

Advances further the students’ understanding of osteopathic diagnosis and treatment, and introduces the concept of reflective practice and current evidence of the mechanisms of pain production. Building on the skills and understanding gained in Osteopathic I, students will develop critical reflection and evidence-based musculoskeletal diagnosis and management of different regions of the body.

Unit content

  • Introduction to general musculoskeletal examination including gait
  • Spinal inter-segmental examination
  • Bio-psycho-social mechanisms of pain production
  • Chronic pain syndromes including central sensitization
  • Evidence-based practice
  • Principles and practice of exercise therapy
  • Reflective practice
  • Muscle energy technique
  • Diagnosis of shoulder dysfunction
  • Introduction to orthopaedic and neurological testing

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
