Unit aim

Introduces students to the pathophysiology underlying human disease processes with an emphasis on cell injury, adaptation and death, genetic and congenital disorders, microbiological and immunologic factors, and neoplasia. Physiological pathology of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, nervous, cardiovascular, endocrine, musculoskeletal and renal systems are foci of this unit

Unit content

  • Cell adaptation, injury and death
  • Genetic and congenital disorders
  • Neoplasia
  • Disorders of the:
    • Gastrointestinal system
    • Hepatobiliary system
    • Respiratory system
    • Endocrine system
    • Musculoskeletal system
    • Nervous system
    • Cardiovascular system
    • Renal system

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 describe cellular changes that occur in various normal adaptive processes and in abnormal or disease processes
2 describe selected genetic and congenital disorders
3 explain neoplasia and its role in carcinogenesis, using specific examples
4 describe the pathophysiology of selected disease states of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, endocrine, cardiovascular, nervous, musculoskeletal and renal systems

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. describe cellular changes that occur in various normal adaptive processes and in abnormal or disease processes
  2. describe selected genetic and congenital disorders
  3. explain neoplasia and its role in carcinogenesis, using specific examples
  4. describe the pathophysiology of selected disease states of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, endocrine, cardiovascular, nervous, musculoskeletal and renal systems
