Unit aim

Develops a detailed technical knowledge of the complex hydrodynamic and sediment transport processes that operate in rivers, estuaries and the coastal ocean. The combined influence of these processes is used to explain and interpret the geomorphology of fluvial and coastal landscapes.

Unit content

Hydrodynamics of natural streams

Mechanics of sediment transport

Fluvial erosion, sediment transport and sediment deposition

Geomorphic characteristics and evolution of Australian fluvial systems

Mechanics of water waves

Hydrodynamics of the coastal ocean

Erosion, transport and deposition of marine sediments

Geomorphic characteristics and evolution of Australian estuaries and beaches

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

GA1: Intellectual rigour, GA2: Creativity, GA3: Ethical practice, GA4: Knowledge of a discipline, GA5: Lifelong learning, GA6: Communication and social skills, GA7: Cultural competence
On completion of this unit, students should be able to: GA1 GA2 GA3 GA4 GA5 GA6 GA7
1 Model and interpret the movement of water in rivers, estuaries and the coastal ocean Knowledge of a discipline
2 Model and interpret the movement of sediments in rivers, estuaries and the coastal ocean Knowledge of a discipline
3 Proficiently use parameters needed to characterise hydrodynamics and sediment transport dynamics of rivers, estuaries and the coastal ocean Intellectual rigour Knowledge of a discipline
4 interpret and evaluate causal relationships between hydrodynamics, sediment transport processes and the geomorphic evolution of rivers, estuaries and beaches. Knowledge of a discipline
