Unit aim

The assessment and remediation of both diffuse and point-source contamination in urban, rural, industrial and mine site environments is addressed. Organic and inorganic contaminants are covered along with chemical, physical and biological remediation techniques, including bioremediation. The principles of environmental risk assessment underpin management approaches for remediation. Students will gain field experience using local examples of contamination and remediation. The principles of environmental protection policy and management guidelines for remediation of contaminated sites will be addressed.

Unit content

Topic 1: Overview of environmental contamination
Topic 2: Assessment of diffuse source contaminants
Topic 3: Assessment of point source contaminants
Topic 4: Analysis approaches for organic contaminants
Topic 5: Analysis approaches for inorganic contaminants
Topic 6: The principles of environmental risk assessment
Topic 7: Health and safety issues for site management
Topic 8: Developing assessment and management plans

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
