GLY00219 Remote Sensing and geographic Information Systems

Unit aim

This subject gives both conceptual background and empirical experience with Geographical Information Systems (GIS), introducing and applying fundamental concepts of GIS, spatial data and spatial analysis. Students experience, via the hands-on use of industry standard GIS software, how GIS is used to store, analyse, visualise and communicate patterns of (often complex) spatial information. Applications in applied sciences and related fields are explored and a key component of the subject is the completion of a student designed GIS analysis.

Unit content

  • The theoretical and practical components of the unit cover
  • Introduction to GIS
  • Maps and spatial information
  • Maps and spatial data models
  • Getting data into a GIS
  • Spatial data management
  • Basic analysis of data in a GIS
  • Topographic analysis and data visualisation
  • Environmental modelling: GIS in real world
  • The trends in GIS

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
