Unit aim

Explores some of the greatest challenges faced by terrestrial and marine ecosystems, from soil erosion to climate change. The underlying causes are examined, and a range of ground-breaking research projects are described that can support the regeneration of Earth’s ecosystems.

2. Salinisation: causes and effects

3. Soil mapping and land capability classification

4. Acidification and acid sulfate soils

5. Climate change impacts

6. Regenerating terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems ecosystems

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 identify and discuss the causes, prevention and rehabilitation of a range of types of habitat degradation
2 apply discipline specific knowledge to identify and prioritise areas for regeneration
3 critically evaluate the principles and practices of ecosystem regeneration
4 critically analyse a selected land use or ecosystem degradation issue in relation to its habitat regeneration potential.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
