### School/College

School of Environment, Science and Engineering

### Pre-requisites

ENG20006 - Fluid Mechanics

## Unit aim

Deals with fluid flow in industrial applications, including heating and air conditioning systems, piping, transport and turbo machinery. This unit builds on earlier material and applies it to viscous internal and external flows, compressible flows and turbo machinery. The underlying physics and mathematical description of fluid flow are addressed, together with flow measurement techniques.

## Unit content

Bernoulli equation

Laminar and turbulent flow, boundary layer for flow of liquids and gases

Flow measurement

External incompressible flow, lift and drag

Compressible flows and shock waves

Dimensional analysis

Turbo machinery

## Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

1. understand the physical and mathematical foundations of fluid mechanics
• GA1: Intellectual rigour
• GA4: Knowledge of a discipline
2. perform basic calculations to analyse fluid flow systems
• GA1: Intellectual rigour
• GA4: Knowledge of a discipline
3. determine when viscous and compressible effects are important in fluid flows and how to use dimensional analysis for categorisation of flows
• GA4: Knowledge of a discipline
• GA4: Knowledge of a discipline
5. make measurements in fluid flows
• GA4: Knowledge of a discipline
6. develop skills in effectively and safely using laboratory equipment in a team environment for experimental investigation of fluid flow phenomena, and in reporting findings
• GA4: Knowledge of a discipline
• GA6: Communication and social skills
7. understand the application of fluid mechanics in mechanical engineering professional practice.
• GA4: Knowledge of a discipline
• GA6: Communication and social skills
