ENG61004 - Construction Materials - Soils AND ENG10757 - Applied Mechanics
Unit aim
Introduces the fundamental principles of soil mechanics and their application. Students will develop a basic knowledge of how the mechanical and structural properties of soil underpin the design of engineered structures.
Unit content
Water flow through soils - hydraulic conductivity
Seepage
In situ soil stresses
Soil settlement
Compressive strength of soils
Shear strength of soils
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to: | GA1 | GA2 | GA3 | GA4 | GA5 | GA6 | GA7 | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | apply analytical methods to determine stresses and strains in soils under load | |||||||
2 | demonstrate understanding of the flow of water in soils. |
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
