Unit aim

Leads students through the processes required to plan and initiate an independent research project that will make an original contribution to knowledge in their engineering discipline. Students are required to conduct a literature review on a chosen topic within their discipline, develop a research proposal, and begin to execute the proposal. The research project is subsequently completed in the unit Engineering Thesis II.

Unit content

Students are required to work independently on their chosen research topic under the guidance of their academic supervisor.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

GA1: Intellectual rigour, GA2: Creativity, GA3: Ethical practice, GA4: Knowledge of a discipline, GA5: Lifelong learning, GA6: Communication and social skills, GA7: Cultural competence
On completion of this unit, students should be able to: GA1 GA2 GA3 GA4 GA5 GA6 GA7
1 identify and locate research literature related to a chosen research area Intellectual rigour Lifelong learning
2 critically review and evaluate relevant research literature using a thematic approach to identify knowledge gaps that could be addressed through a research project Intellectual rigour Knowledge of a discipline Lifelong learning
3 define the scope of a research project to address one or more identified gaps in existing knowledge in terms of achievable aims and an appropriate methodology Intellectual rigour Creativity Lifelong learning
4 present a coherent written proposal for a research study that describes the background, aims, rationale, methodology, and anticipated outcomes for the proposed study Intellectual rigour Knowledge of a discipline Communication and social skills
5 demonstrate an ability to initiate a research project by sourcing necessary resources, obtaining necessary approvals, and commencing preliminary data collection. Intellectual rigour Creativity Ethical practice Lifelong learning
