Unit aim

Introduces students to the history and scope of the broad discipline of construction engineering and to the major engineering construction materials, machinery and processes. Students will develop an appreciation of the elements of engineering construction including, safety, environment, managing people, logistics, planning, risk and economics.

Estimating quantities, alternatives, and tender documentation

Contextual objectives and constraints in construction including safety, cost, time, environment, community needs, sustainability, business needs, other stakeholder needs

Construction planning and tendering overview, roles and responsibilities, and managing risk

Bulk earthworks planning including cut and fill calculations, haul road timing and planning, machine selection, optimised production, capital plant operation, costing/estimating, tendering

Managing people and working in a team

1 demonstrate familiarity with the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary construction engineering and tendering practice, including the various sub branches of engineering construction
2 demonstrate knowledge of construction materials, construction techniques and construction machinery and be able to fluently apply this knowledge to solve engineering construction problems and accurately tender for construction projects
3 analyse contextual factors impacting specific construction projects and apply suitable ethical judgement to balance competing priorities such as safety, cost, time, environment, community needs, sustainability, business needs and other stakeholder needs such as traditional land title
4 demonstrate an ability to develop creative and innovative solutions to complex construction engineering problems
5 work effectively in a team environment to produce construction reports and tender documentation
6 clearly communicate construction project and tender documentation in written formats.
