Unit aim
Introduces concepts of the engineering design process and design philosophy through an authentic real world engineering problem. Tools such as risk management, contextual thinking, critical thinking, brainstorming and mind mapping are covered. A core aspect of the unit is introducing students to the Engineers Australia stage 1 competencies and the use of reflective writing to demonstrate the development of these competencies over time.

- What is engineering? What are the major and sub disciplines of engineering?
- Introduction to the role of engineers in society and the importance of engineering ethics
- Robotics, computer programming and logic control systems
- The engineering design process and philosophy of engineering design
- Engineering drawing
- Conceptual problem solving techniques; brainstorming, mind mapping, critical and contextual thinking
- Reflective practice, ePortfolios and Engineers Australia stage 1 competencies
- Working as part of a team
- Managing engineering risk
Learning outcomes
