UG Coursework Unit
Level of learning
Examines the response of bodies or systems of bodies, at rest or in motion, to external load actions. Applied mechanics is the practical application of the principles of mechanics to real world examples. Statics is a branch of mechanics which deals with bodies at rest under the influence of forces in equilibrium. A teacher-student interaction strategy is used to ensure an understanding of the concepts and principles of mechanics.
Topic 1: Introduction to vectors
Topic 2: Vector sums, dot and cross products
Topic 3: Free body diagrams
Topic 4: Forces in equilibrium
Topic 5: Moments and couples
Topic 6: Centroids, first and second moments of area
Topic 7: Reactions in simply supported beams
Topic 8: Shearing force and bending moment
Topic 9: Trusses: reactions and forces in truss members
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
|On completion of this unit, students should be able to:||GA1||GA2||GA3||GA4||GA5||GA6||GA7|
|1||demonstrate an understanding of load actions acting on bodies in equilibrium|
|2||demonstrate proficiency in calculating reactions in beams and trusses|
|3||determine properties of area including centroids and first and second moments of area|
|4||analyse axial force, shear force and bending moments in simple structures|
|5||analyse simply supported trusses to determine member forces|
|6||demonstrate proficiency in conducting and recording experimental results and presenting the results in a written report.|
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
demonstrate an understanding of load actions acting on bodies in equilibrium
demonstrate proficiency in calculating reactions in beams and trusses
determine properties of area including centroids and first and second moments of area
analyse axial force, shear force and bending moments in simple structures
analyse simply supported trusses to determine member forces
demonstrate proficiency in conducting and recording experimental results and presenting the results in a written report.
