Unit aim

Extends the skills and the beginning teacher's methodological basis for teaching Music with a particular emphasis on the senior (Stage 6) curriculum (Music 1, Music 2 and Music Extension). It aims to provide student teachers with a variety of teaching and learning strategies for use in the senior music classroom. Students are encouraged to relate and extend their knowledge and experiences of the concepts of music through the aspects of aural composition, musicology and performance appropriate for the secondary school context.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 demonstrate a broad and critical understanding of the knowledge base of the Stage 6 MusicĀ 1, Music 2 and Extension syllabuses, including recent theory and research, contemporary perspectives and issues, and cultural contexts of relevance
2 develop an engaging unit of work that is aligned to and informed by the learning objectives, objects, key competencies, knowledge, skills and understandings of the Music Stage 6 syllabus, in ways that demonstrate effective teaching and learning, including the integration of appropriate resources (including ICT)
3 apply current pedagogical theory including the NSW DEC Quality Teaching Framework to the development of effective teaching and learning strategies that encourage students with a diversity of learning needs, styles and cultural backgrounds to engage effectively with Music in Stage 6
4 identify and critically examine assessment and reporting procedures and strategies in the context of the Preliminary and HSC standards-referenced assessment framework, and prepare assessment tasks and marking criteria for Stage 6 outcomes with a particular emphasis on integration of Performance, Composition, Musicology and Aural components

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
