Unit aim

Explores the broad social and political terrain across which educational leaders operate, at state, national and global levels. Students will critically engage with current perspectives of educational reform and their associated criticisms.The disruptive and/or empowering influences of technology upon education and school leadership will be explored and analysed. Probable, possible and preferable future scenarios of change in educational contexts will also be examined.

Unit content

Topic 1: A ‘tsunami’ of change: an introduction to contemporary educational contexts. 

Topic 2: Educational reform policies: local, national and global agendas.

Topic 3: Engaging and working with parents and the community.

Topic 4: Influences of, and responses to, technological change in educational contexts. 

Topic 5: Future scenarios of contextual change influencing educational environments. 

Topic 6: Challenges and opportunities for educational leadership in times of exponential change.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 Demonstrate familiarity with key influences on contemporary education contexts, and their historical origins.
2 Critically analyse key elements of contemporary education contexts.
3 Reflect on case studies of disruptive and/or empowering elements of technological change, government policy or parent and community engagement, and their effects on educational environments, and consider alternative strategies and outcomes.
4 Identify and analyse the effects of educational change on local work environments, and propose strategies to achieve preferable educational futures.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
