Unit aim

Introduces students to visual arts teaching in secondary education. Students learn about syllabus requirements, the development of a unit of work, the development of detailed lesson plans and the selection of appropriate assessment strategies. There is also an opportunity to reflect critically on a range of contemporary pedagogical perspectives (including the NSW Quality Teaching Framework), and issues in the teaching of visual arts in secondary schools. The focus in this unit is on the Years 7–10 classroom.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 demonstrate a working knowledge of the concepts and content of the Years 7-10 Visual Arts and elective syllabi, including cross-curriculum priorities and general capabilities
2 prepare detailed, engaging, coherent and effective lesson plans and units of work that relate to selected syllabus content and learning outcomes, assessing the appropriateness of resources (including ICT) that link to informed and effective teaching and learning
3 demonstrate effective teaching and learning strategies, based on a range of current pedagogical frameworks
4 apply an understanding of aspects of curriculum differentiation in order to meet the diverse needs and cultural backgrounds of learners, and to engage students in active learning

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
