Unit aim

Provides students with an opportunity to engage in academic research in a specified discipline area through the completion under guidance of a thesis. This unit comprises the third and final part of the Bachelor of Education (Honours) program.

Unit content

With guidance from an academic supervisor, students will typically cover the following topics:

  • Thesis planning
  • Literature review
  • Planning and conducting a research project
  • Applying relevant methodologies and methods
  • Writing a draft thesis
  • Completing a thesis for submission
  • Disseminating findings in a research presentation
  • Publication

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 demonstrate a broad understanding of a body of knowledge and theoretical concepts in education, with advanced understanding in at least one area of investigation
2 demonstrate skills in critically reviewing, analysing, and synthesising knowledge in education
3 practise ethical and inclusive enquiry and communication
4 demonstrate written, verbal, and other relevant communication skills to present a clear and coherent exposition of knowledge
5 create a thesis that demonstrates research and design skills, critical thinking, initiative and judgment in developing new understanding
6 exercise autonomy in one’s learning and responsibility in one’s practice as a researcher
7 disseminate findings in diverse contexts

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
