Unit aim

Interrogates senior secondary science teaching practices in the 21st century. It builds on EDUC2004 - Science:  Secondary Curriculum and Pedagogy I to extend students’ understanding of secondary teaching in the key learning areas for the science Australian Curriculum and NSW Syllabus.  Students will design and facilitate lessons, assessments, resources and activities for NSW Years 11 and 12 Science Syllabuses/Australian Curriculum within in their subject areas. These designs will be informed by a range of teaching and learning priorities including Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander cultures, sustainability, critical and creative thinking, inquiry-based learning, differentiation, disability and inclusion, digital technologies, literacy and numeracy. A critical reflection on local and global issues and their significance to teaching and issues in the teaching of science in secondary schools will also be addressed. There will be a practical school based/community element incorporated into the unit.

Module 1: Exploring the context of your senior secondary students’ lives. 

Module 2: Understanding the requirements of the senior secondary science curriculum/syllabus.

Module 3: Assessment and reporting practices. 

Module 4: Exploring how we teach in Senior Secondary Science.  

Module 5: Programming units and planning lessons.

Module 6: Additional Considerations for Practice.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 demonstrate a working knowledge of the concepts and content of at least two NSW Stage 6 Syllabus or Australian Curriculum Year 11 and 12 subject areas and critically discuss a range of contemporary perspectives and issues on the teaching of Science in senior school
2 demonstrate knowledge of syllabus key competencies, objectives and outcomes, that reflect a well-developed ability to plan for effective learning for students from diverse backgrounds and a range of abilities
3 develop effective teaching and learning activities to integrate literacy and numeracy strategies and source and assess the appropriateness of resources (including ICT) that link to informed and effective teaching and learning across the Science Stage 6 syllabus or Australian Curriculum Year 11 and 12
4 demonstrate an understanding of professional practice by applying suitable laboratory safety including OH&S management, control and safety techniques, especially in relation to laboratory and fieldwork

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
