Unit aim
Introduces students to curriculum, assessment and pedagogy in the key learning area of Human Society and its Environment (HSIE). It focuses on Years 7–10 (Stages 4–5) syllabuses within the continuum of learning. The unit encourages critical engagement with the role, value, requirements and current issues of HSIE. Students will design lessons, assessments, resources and activities related to units from their subject syllabus. These designs will be informed by a range of teaching and learning priorities including critical, creative and connected inquiry-based learning, differentiation, disability and inclusion, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, digital technologies, literacy and numeracy.

Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

2 | demonstrate a working knowledge of the concepts and content of the HSIE Years 7–10 curriculum through the design of lessons, assessments, resources and activities related to units from a subject syllabus that are informed by teaching and learning priorities including differentiation, disability and inclusion, and embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, digital technologies, literacy and numeracy |
3 | demonstrate effective teaching and learning strategies, based on a range of current pedagogical frameworks (e.g. Quality Teaching Framework) designed to encourage the development of knowledge, understanding, skills, and student engagement |
4 | apply and evaluate strategies to assess student achievement of learning outcomes, including assessment 'for' and 'of' learning, to recognise how learners use their current understanding to discover, develop and incorporate new skills, knowledge and understanding, and to report on the achievement of learning outcomes |
