Unit aim

Investigates pedagogical theory related to the teaching of dance and gymnastics to Stage 4 and Stage 5 school students. Students will examine cooperative learning, assessment approaches, and the principles of peer and self-assessment.  Students will apply these pedagogical concepts to their personal and practicum-based experiences in dance and gymnastics.

Module 4: Pedagogical practice, application and safety

Module 5: Contemporary gymnastic movement 1

Module 6: Contemporary gymnastic movement 2 and evaluating movement

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 safely and competently conduct basic educational dance and educational gymnastics experiences for Stage 4 and Stage 5 school students
2 describe and apply the principles of co-operative learning, peer-assessment and self- assessment within the contexts of this unit's dance and gymnastics learning experiences
3 discuss the strengths and weaknesses of co-operative learning, peer-assessment and self- assessment for learning and assessment with Stage 4 and 5 students. Discuss the relevance and value of gymnastics and dance education for young people
4 locate co-operative learning, peer-assessment and self-assessment within the spectrum of teaching styles available to physical education teachers

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
