Unit aim

Provides students with the opportunity to develop organisational research skills and critically evaluate the literature relating to an educational problem, phenomena, or knowledge need, with a view to identifying research possibilities. Students are assisted to develop skills in academic writing, advanced word processing, establishing a bibliographic database, accessing information sources, managing a literature review and structuring an evaluative argument about the research literature in their area.

Unit content

Week 1: Foundational research skills.
Week 2: The nature and purpose of a critical literature review.
Week 3: Logistics of researching a topic - accessing information sources, literature search strategies, managing the literature review process.
Weeks 4,5 & 6: Writing a literature review, including structuring an argument through a literature review.
