Unit aim

Considers the nature of educational change and innovation and the conditions that facilitate it, with a particular focus on the role technology plays in relation to innovation and change. Students reflect critically on their own value, attitudes and beliefs about educational change and innovation and undertake an investigation of a case study in an area of personal or professional interest.

Unit content

The nature of educational change, including the influence of social, cultural, and political factors over time. Individual and collective values, attitudes and beliefs about change. Examples of trends and innovations. These would embrace case studies from a range of educational issues and areas of practice including (but not limited to):

  • The interpretation of grand narrative theories for the field of Education
  • Educational systems and structures
  • Traditions of educational focus, such as literacy, numeracy, multiliteracies etc.
  • Curriculum
  • Pedagogy and educational design
  • Student welfare
  • Student–teacher relationships
  • Physical learning environments
  • Technology

4 critically evaluate a particular change or innovation of personal professional interest, and identify the factors that impact on the uptake or implementation of that innovation.
