Unit aim

Develops an understanding of the nature and role of mathematics. Focuses on the learning and teaching of a range of topics in the NSW Syllabus for Mathematics K-10 and in the Australian Curriculum for Mathematics F-10 including Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability.

Topic 1: Australian Curriculum F-6 and NSW Mathematics K-10 Syllabus

  • Defining the role of mathematics education
  • Overview of the structure, content and requirements of the Australian Curriculum F-6 Mathematics and K-6 of the NSW Mathematics K-10 Syllabus
  • Working Mathematically
  • Mathematical Proficiencies

Topic 2: Lesson Planning I

  • Aligning lesson plans to curriculum/syllabus documents

Topic 3: Resourcing your teaching practice

  • Australian Curriculum resources e.g. Scootle
  • National and International sources
  • Evaluating resources
  • Academic literature supporting teaching of K-6 mathematics

MODULE 2

Following topics will be presented in order. Topics within Module 1 will continue to be reinforced and developed through relating to topics in Module 2.

Topic 5: Teaching Strategies for Number and Algebra

  • Curriculum requirements

Topic 6: Teaching Strategies for Measurement and Geometry

  • Curriculum requirements

Topic 7: Teaching Strategies for Statistics and Probability
