Unit aim

Examines legislative frameworks, federal government policy, state education policies, educational administration and the effective implementation of school policies relevant to disability education. Develops the skills required for effectively collaborating with students, families, school staff and other professionals to ensure students with additional learning and support needs have full access to quality learning experiences.

1 Demonstrate broad knowledge and understanding of legislative requirements and educational policies in meeting additional learning and support needs of students.
2 Understand the cultural change required within our society, including schools to facilitate reform in the disability sector.
3 Outline the range of services and provisions available to meet the additional learning and support needs of students, including those with high support needs.
4 Discuss the impact of relevant school based policies that enhance access to quality learning experiences and ensure safe learning environments.
5 Demonstrate the skills and attitudes for collaboration, problem solving and team work through effective listening, questioning and problem solving when collaborating with students, families, school staff or other professionals.
6 Understand family perspectives and consider advice from other professionals especially when supporting high support need students.
7 Recognise evidence based effective teaching strategies and critically analyse unorthodox methods of intervention.
