EDU10694 - Contemporary Health Issues for Young People (2017)

Focuses on exploring the health priority areas of sexual health and relationships, drugs and alcohol, safety and nutrition as they relate to young people. Examines key policy responses as they pertain to schooling, with a particular focus on curriculum imperatives and classroom teaching.

This unit builds on understandings developed in the unit Promoting the Health and Wellbeing of Young People. The unit has a particular focus on exploring the priority health areas of drugs, sexual health and relationships, and road safety, with an emphasis on considerations for curriculum teaching and learning. The unit is divided into two modules. The first module focuses on developing key understandings related to the priority health areas. The second module explores each of the priority health issues in more depth to develop student understandings of the role of curriculum teaching and learning in prevention and promotion frameworks. This module places significant emphasis on developing student understandings and competencies in the use of contemporary, innovative and responsive health education pedagogies.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit.
