Unit aim

This unit investigates pedagogical theory related to the teaching of dance and gymnastics to Stage 4 and Stage 5 school students. Students will examine cooperative learning, assessment approaches, and the principles of peer and self-assessment.  Students will apply these pedagogical concepts to their personal and practicum-based experiences in dance and gymnastics.

Module 1 - Dance 

  • Introduction to teaching in dance
  • Pedagogical practices in dance
  • Peer and Self-assessment in the dance context
  • Dance Elements/Dynamics and Timing
  • Dance vocabulary: concept and words needed to explain it; movement terms
  • Equipment and materials
  • Class Management issues and appropriate practices

Module 2 - Gymnastic movements 

  • Introduction to teaching in gymnastic movement
  • Designing gymnastic and parcour learning
  • Pedagogical practices in dance
  • Task design – assessing movement
