Unit aim

Encourages students to value career-long professional learning and provides an opportunity for students to investigate a classroom, school or community-based educational problem or issue of their own choosing and to present the findings in a format suitable for professional dissemination.

Unit content

  • The role of professional and research literature and professional groups in supporting ongoing professional learning (including professional organisations, conferences, websites, journals and magazines)
  • Planning for your investigation
  • Conducting your investigation
  • Presenting findings from your investigation.

The topic of the project will be determined through negotiation between the student and the unit assessor or his/her nominee.

1 identify ways in which new knowledge, ideas and experiences are disseminated within professional educational communities and the importance of career-long professional learning
2 formulate a researchable issue or problem of their own choosing for further investigation
3 assess the ethical issues involved in researching with children and conform to ethical principles, protocols and requirements when conducting investigations within educational contexts
4 choose from the methodologies outlined an appropriate approach to investigate the issue, including (where relevant) implementing and evaluating an educational intervention
5 gather and present appropriate data to support the investigation and (where relevant) to evaluate outcomes arising from an intervention and recommend follow-up strategies
6 present the findings of the investigation in a format suitable for professional dissemination.
