Unit aim

Introduces students to the study of teaching and learning English as an additional language/dialect and the critical role that culture plays in the learning process. The unit has been designed to inform prospective teachers about the particular needs of non English speaking background children learning English as their second language or dialect in a school context. The unit is primarily aimed at the practical application of language learning theory.

1 demonstrate detailed knowledge of the relationship between language and culture, and the notion of multiculturalism as evident in the primary classroom
2 express a clear understanding of the theories of second language learning and strategies associated with teaching EAL/D students
3 discuss a range of oral language and written language pedagogical practices for teaching, assessing and evaluating students who are EAL/D
4 implement and evaluate EAL/D strategies for enhancing communication, and strategies for teaching vocabulary
5 design a unit of work, developed within a cultural context, that focus on listening, speaking, reading, and writing for an identified EAL/D learner.
