Unit aim

Introduces students to the study of teaching and learning English as a second language and the critical role that culture plays in the learning process. The unit has been designed to inform prospective primary classroom teachers about the particular needs of non English speaking background children learning English as their second language or dialect in a school context. The unit is primarily aimed at the practical application of language learning theory.

Topic 4 Reading in a second language
Topic 5 Putting it all together in the classroom

3 discuss a range of oral language and written language pedagogical practices for teaching, assessing and evaluating students who are learning English as another language
4 implement and evaluate ESL strategies for enhancing communication, and strategies for teaching vocabulary for TESOL
5 design a unit of work, developed within a cultural context, that focus on listening, speaking, reading, and writing for an identified ESL learner.
