DES10653 - Timber Industry Practice and Management (2017)

Enhances students' understanding of historical, social, cultural, economic, personal and environmental issues related to the timber industry. The design and manufacture of timber products is considered. This unit extends students' skills and methods for joinery, construction and finishing of timber products and their understanding of the use and maintenance of tools and machinery.

1. Historical developments in the timber industry and their impact on manufacturing processes, materials and work practices. 
2. Past and present impact of the timber products and furniture industries on the economy, society and the environment. 
3. Structural, technical, environmental and sociological considerations related to the timber industry. 
4. Personnel issues and occupational health and safety issues related to the timber industry. 
5. New and emerging technologies in the timber industry and their impact on the way manufactured products are made and used. 
6. The principals and practice of design and production/manufacture in the timber products and furniture industry including prototyping, modelling and testing. 
7. Advanced contemporary skills and methods for joinery, construction and finishing of timber products. 
8. Use and maintenance of tools and machinery used in the manufacture of timber products. 
9. Project management (including WHS issues) and communication skills and their application to the production and documentation of a complex, high quality timber product
