Unit aim
Introduces knowledge and skills required to design, prepare and produce using metal technology. The mechanical and physical properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals will be examined, together with mining, refining and production processes. Develop skills and knowledge related to marking out, cutting, machining, fabricating, joining, modifying properties, colouring and finishing, and industry-specific workplace communication skills.
Unit content
- Mechanical and physical properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in various structural and non-structural forms
- Modification of properties of a range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals
- Mining, refining and production of a range of metals
- Commonly used sections and shapes of metals
- Selection of appropriate metal or metal products for use in a range of consumer, commercial and industrial contexts
- Graphical communication techniques including engineering and workshop drawing, rendering and industry production drawing specification applicable in the production of metal projects
- Industry specific workplace communication including literacy, numeracy and calculations
- WHS issues in the metal workshop environment
- Contemporary skills and methods used for a variety of metals in marking out, cutting, machining, fabricating, joining, modifying properties, colouring and finishing
- The use and maintenance of a range of appropriate tools and machinery used in the manufacture of metal products
- Practical application of design principals through the design, manufacture, and presentation of metal products
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to: | GA1 | GA2 | GA3 | GA4 | GA5 | GA6 | GA7 | |
