Unit aim

Introduces students to design themes and technological developments from the Renaissance to the 2000's together with Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islands and other Indigenous communities. Students list and summarise design themes and the interrelationships and differences between Western and Indigenous technological developments. Students critically analyse new and emerging technologies and the impact on the individual, society and environment.

Topic 1: The beginnings of technological praxis
Topic 2: Design and technology purpose in Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and other Indigenous communities
Topic 3: Technological developments and design themes, features and general history of western society 11th -16th centuries
Topic 4: Technological developments and design themes features and general history of western society 17th, 18th and 19th centuries
Topic 5: Technology in the 20th century
Topic 6: History of design and historical, social and political influences
Topic 7: Technological developments and design in Australia
Topic 8: The cyclic nature between cottage industry and mass production
Topic 9: The impact of past and current design and technologies on the individual, society and the environment
Topic 10: Implications of new and emerging technologies, the impact of globalisation and environmental sustainability
