Unit aim

Increases awareness of Aboriginal and other Indigenous peoples’ beliefs, understandings, histories, ways of living and social commitments whilst raising understanding of matters relevant to a shared Australian history and valued future for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

1 show an appreciation for the diversity and complexity of Indigenous Australian world-views, philosophies and lore/law as well as an appreciation of Indigenous Australian world-views and cultural practices as legitimate bodies of knowledge within a dominant western paradigm
2 outline the foundations of cultural safety and a basis for a cultural competency framework within an Indigenous Australian context
3 describe Indigenous Australian notions of wellbeing, ways of being in the world and Indigenous knowledge systems
4 examine the concept of Indigenous relatedness with particular regards to Australian Indigenous kinship and the relationship Indigenous Australians have with their environment
5 recognise the ways that Indigenous peoples throughout the world have maintained their cultures through communication, literary and education systems, with an analysis of Indigenous ways in education in an Australian context
6 outline Indigenous spirituality/religion, ceremony and ritual including both traditional and contemporary beliefs and practices in Australia.
