Unit aim

This unit will provide the student with an overall understanding of database concepts and theory. Students will learn how to design and build a database, from data analysis to mapping a specific database model. The relational model is emphasized and introduced using structured queried language (SQL) for creating and manipulating databases. Assignment work includes the analysis, design, and implementation of a database.

Unit content

1. Database fundamentals
2. Introduction to relational databases
3. Creating databases
4. SQL scripts
5. Data modelling
6. Introduction to database web apps
7. Advanced database design
8. Client server databases
9. More web applications
10. Database administration and warehousing

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
