Unit Summary

Unit type

UG Coursework Unit

Credit points

6

Unit aim

Develops the ability to perform rainfall-runoff modelling using the principles and procedures described in Australian Rainfall and Runoff, Australia's handbook for hydrologic design. Students will learn to use industry-standard software to calculate flood hydrographs and predict flood peaks under a range of different hydrologic conditions.

Unit content

Rainfall-runoff modelling approaches

Runoff: the output from a rainfall-runoff model

Rainfall: the input to a rainfall runoff-model

Transfer functions and accounting for losses

Hydrologic routing

Application of rainfall-runoff modelling in contemporary practice

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 describe the structure, inputs and outputs, and features of different rainfall-runoff modelling approaches
2 identify, locate and prepare all necessary input data and other information needed to construct a rainfall-runoff model for different catchments
3 produce a written technical report based on proficient application of rainfall-runoff modelling to a real-world hydrologic design problem using industry-standard software.

  2. identify, locate and prepare all necessary input data and other information needed to construct a rainfall-runoff model for different catchments
  3. produce a written technical report based on proficient application of rainfall-runoff modelling to a real-world hydrologic design problem using industry-standard software.
