Unit aim

Introduces the concepts of traffic engineering and explains the fundamental principles of traffic flow theory and analysis. Develops the ability to conduct traffic capacity analysis for various types of roads and intersections. An understanding of road safety is also developed.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 demonstrate an in-depth understanding of traffic engineering, and related professional and ethical responsibilities including road safety, and the contextual factors which influence decision making within the discipline
2 analyse traffic and transport systems including traffic aspects such as travel demand, existing traffic volumes, traffic generation and distribution, intersection analysis, road capacity analysis, degree of saturation and level of service
3 use traffic analysis software to analyse traffic engineering problems
4 identify, formulate and solve traffic problems using established traffic engineering methods, creativity, innovation and pre-emptive approaches.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
