Unit aim

Examines the response of bodies or systems of bodies at rest when subjected to external load actions. Covers the fundamental mechanics concepts of vectors, loads, freebody diagrams and equilibrium. Presents methods to calculate reactions, forces in trusses, as well as sectional properties, internal forces and friction.

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1 demonstrate an understanding of load actions acting on bodies in equilibrium
2 demonstrate proficiency in calculating reactions in beams and trusses
3 determine properties of area including centroids and first and second moments of area
4 analyse axial force, shear force and bending moments in simple structures
5 analyse simply supported trusses to determine member forces
6 analyse problems involving frictional forces.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
