UG Coursework Unit
Provides students with detailed insight into dealing with hazardous and complex wastes and leachates. Innovative and practical approaches to treating, storing, and managing waste in various compartments of the environment will be explored. Case studies from mining, medical industries, agriculture and industrial processing will be used to highlight challenges in managing hazardous waste and identify solutions to reduce impacts on the environment.
Creation of hazardous wastes and leachates
Hazardous waste and leachate characterisation
Hazardous waste producers
Waste storage and leachate containment
Identifying toxicity and waste detoxification
Dealing with storage failure
Strategies to mitigate hazardous waste
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
|On completion of this unit, students should be able to:|
|1||identify and characterise types of hazardous waste and leachate|
|2||develop strategies for dealing with hazardous waste and leachates|
|3||solve complex problems associate with hazardous waste and leachate reduction and mitigation|
|4||understand the sources of hazardous waste and how leachates are produced.|
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
- identify and characterise types of hazardous waste and leachate
- develop strategies for dealing with hazardous waste and leachates
- solve complex problems associate with hazardous waste and leachate reduction and mitigation
- understand the sources of hazardous waste and how leachates are produced.
